Will it actually start when the power goes out?
Most standby units sit unused eleven months a year, then get asked to work on day one of a shutoff. We test that properly.
The honest version
You bought it after a bad season. It has run its weekly self-test ever since, and you have not thought about it. That is normal, and it is not the problem.
The problem is that a weekly self-test runs the engine for a few minutes with no load on it. It proves the engine turns over. It does not prove the unit can pick up your house.
And the single most common failure is not the engine at all. It is the battery, which sits there quietly losing capacity for two or three years and then does nothing on the night it matters.

Every visit ends with one. We cut the unit over under real load, exactly as a shutoff would, and watch it carry the house. That is the only test that answers the question you actually have, and it is the reason to book a visit rather than assume it is fine.

What a service visit covers

Oil, filters and plugs
Genuine Generac parts, changed at the manufacturer’s interval rather than whenever someone remembers.

Battery load test
Tested under load, not just checked for voltage. A battery can read fine at rest and still fail to crank.

Transfer switch and controller
The switch is what hands your house over. It gets inspected and exercised, and the controller gets read for stored faults.

Full load test
A simulated outage at the end of the visit, so you have seen it carry the house before you need it to.
Pre-season slots go first.
Same-week appointments across Alpine, Jamul, Ramona, Poway, Santee, El Cajon and Lakeside.
Before you book
What does it cost?
Annual service runs $250 to $500 depending on the size of the unit and what it needs. You get the price before the visit, not after.
How often should it be serviced?
Generac specifies annually for most residential units. Coastal properties and heavily used units benefit from twice a year, because salt air is hard on connections.
Does skipping service void my warranty?
It can. Manufacturer warranties generally require documented maintenance at the specified interval. We keep the records, so the paperwork exists if you ever need to make a claim.
It runs its weekly test fine. Is that not enough?
The self-test runs the engine unloaded for a few minutes. It confirms the engine starts. It does not confirm the unit can carry your house, and it will not catch a battery that is fading.
Do you service units you did not install?
Yes, and a large share of our service work is exactly that.
Find out now, not then.
One visit, a real load test, and you will know where you stand before the next shutoff.
