What it is probably doing
Standby units fail in a small number of predictable ways, and most of them are not the engine.
The controller is telling you something. What it is telling you is the difference between a part that costs a couple of hundred dollars and one that costs a couple of thousand.
It cranks but will not catch
Usually fuel delivery, plugs or a starved gas supply. Rarely the engine itself.
It is throwing a fault code
The controller has already diagnosed something. The code tells us where to look first.
The grid dropped and it did not transfer
The generator may be fine. The transfer switch is what failed to hand the house over.
Nothing at all
Most often the battery. A standby unit sits idle for months and batteries quietly die in place.
Please do not clear the code
It is the obvious thing to do, and it is the expensive thing to do. Fault codes exist to stop the unit before it damages itself.
Running a generator through an active fault can turn a two hundred dollar sensor into a two thousand dollar stator failure. If it has shut itself down, leave it down and let us read it first.

What will this cost?
The diagnostic is $149 and comes off the repair if you go ahead. Beyond that it depends entirely on what failed. Batteries and sensors are at the low end, controllers and alternators at the high end. You get the number in writing before we start.
How soon can someone come out?
Same-week appointments are normal across East County. If your unit is down and a shutoff is forecast, say so when you call and we will prioritise accordingly.
Do you work on generators you did not install?
Yes. A large share of our service work is on units installed by someone else.
It is under warranty. Does that change anything?
Only in your favour. As a certified Generac dealer we can carry out warranty repairs directly and handle the claim ourselves.
Is it worth repairing or should I replace it?
Depends on age, hours and what failed. We will tell you honestly when a repair is not the sensible spend, and we would rather say so at the diagnostic than after you have paid for parts.
