How we size a system
Sizing is a load calculation, not a guess. We add up what has to run at the same time, account for motor starting loads, and choose the smallest unit that carries it with headroom to spare. Undersizing causes nuisance shutdowns during the exact event you bought the generator for. Oversizing means paying for capacity that never gets used.
Two homes of identical square footage routinely land two sizes apart. A house with two AC compressors, a well pump, and an electric range needs materially more than a house on city water with a gas range.
What moves you up a size
- More than one air conditioning compressor
- A well pump, especially 1 HP or larger
- Electric range, electric dryer, or electric water heater
- An EV charger you want available during an outage
- A workshop, detached structure, or sub-panel
Beyond air-cooled
The Guardian line tops out at 28 kW. Homes with demand beyond that — or properties needing three-phase power — move to Generac’s liquid-cooled Protector and XG Protector series, which run from 25 kW up past 60 kW. Those are a different conversation and a different price bracket. If your load calculation lands there, we will tell you plainly rather than selling you an air-cooled unit that will struggle.
What every installation includes

Warranty and service
Guardian Series units carry a 5-year limited warranty from Generac, with 24/7 support. A standby generator runs a self-test on a set schedule and needs periodic service the same way any engine does — oil, filters, plugs, and battery. We offer service plans that keep that on a calendar, because the failure people actually experience is a generator that was never serviced and would not start when the power finally went out.
